Devonshire Wolf, Aenocyon devonshirensis is a species of wolf found across Devonshire, Shire and Gaul. It is seen on the coat of arms of Devonshire.
Description[edit]
The Devonshire Wolf is a large, long-legged wolf species closely related to the Maned Wolf and Dire Wolf, and may have evolved from the latter. It stands 30–45 in (76–114 cm), and weighs 70–100 lb (32–45 kg), with males being larger than females; however, males and females have similar coat patterns. They have long, sharp claws, used to hunt fish, deer, rodents, birds, and other vertebrates, but also uses its claws to open up melons and other fruit.
They range in various colours, from black, white, grey, liver, chestnut, brown, silver, orange, fawn, and cream. Their fur is usually solid-coloured or with two-coloured pattern, countershaded with a dark colour on top, light on the bottom, like a Grey Wolf.
Hybrids between dogs and wolves are uncommon, and can cause unusual fur patterns and colours, such as lilac, blue, apricot-coloured wolves with spots or brindle patterns.
Their eyes are normally blue or yellow, with slit-shaped pupils like a cat or fox’s pupils.
Similar species[edit]
It closely resembles a Grey Wolf and Dire Wolf, but is taller and lankier. It also resembles a Maned Wolf but with more colour forms, with similar slim legs that resemble a deer.
Behaviour[edit]
Diet[edit]
Is omnivorous but mostly hunts. Eats prey as small as grasshoppers all the way up to the size deer and horses. Prefers smaller prey such as small rodents and birds. Also eats fruit such as cantaloupes, watermelons, grapes, cranberries, squashes, and other fruits.
In captivity, it can be fed a vegetarian diet because of their omnivory, and it has enzymes that can digest vegetable proteins.
Calls[edit]
Howls, barks, and whines are common sounds they make. Howls are often long and drawn out, up to 10 minutes. It is their main form of communication.
Reproduction[edit]
Devonshire Wolves are sexually mature by four years. Typically, only the top-ranking male and female will breed. Young are born between March-June. Young are weaned when they're four months old.
Distribution/habitat[edit]
Found throughout the forests and mountains of Devonshire and Shire, where it is sometimes found. Is quite rare and prefers to avoid contact with humans.
Domestication[edit]
Despite preferring to avoid humans, however; this species can be easily tamed and is sometimes considered an exotic pet, but they are not easily domesticated because of their wild nature. It will bond easily with its caretakers. It can digest the enzymes found in plant material and can live off strictly plants.
