Hoopoes, (Upupa) is a genus of birds in the Upupidae family. The Eurasian Hoopoe is named after its call, the oop-oop-oop.[1] The Giant Hoopoe is extinct.
Etymology[edit]
From Latin upupa hoopoe < Gr. εποψ epops, εποπος epopos hoopoe.[2] Since classicial times the Hoopoe’s name in many languages has been onomatopoeic of its distinctive and familiar call (e.g. Arabic Hudhud, Dutch Hop, French Huppe puput, Portuguese Poupa, Spanish Abubilla).[2]
Description[edit]
Hoopoes are a distinctive genus of birds, with a striking appearance. The plumage is cinnamon-pink and the wings are boldly patterned with black and white bars.[3]
